To be wholehearted...

For the past few years I have chosen a word at the beginning of January, and shared it visibly on my blog in hopes of using it to guide and define the upcoming months...a One Little Word. My words have been: begin, flourish, abundance, and last year was thrive.

For 2015 the word "wholehearted" is what I've chosen...or what has chosen me. Its first big impact was through Brene Brown's TED talk on vulnerability. Its a must-watch if you haven't seen it yet! She is a researcher/storyteller who spent a long time researching vulnerability, shame and connection. So much of her words resonated with me.

I wanted to find myself in her manilla folder full of "wholehearted" people. People who live from a deep sense of worthiness; a belief that they are worthy of love and belonging. That concept resonates with me so intensely. One of my favorite things she said in her talk was an explanation of the meaning of courage. It comes from the Latin word: cour; meaning "heart" and its original definition was to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart. And that is what I want to do in 2015...what I want to do in my whole life.

To be courageous and live wholeheartedly. And through this vulnerability, embrace the gift of true connection.

wholehearted [hohl-hahr-tid] - adjective: 1) fully or completely sincere, enthusiastic, energetic; hearty; earnest. 2) done, acted, given, etc. with total sincerity, enthusiasm or commitment. 3) unconditional commitment, unstinting devotion or unreserved enthusiasm; genuine and true.

I aspire to be wholehearted in my relationships, in my worship, in my decisions and in my art. I feel a need to lean into living and loving fully. I yearn to be enthusiastic for the things that fill my days. I long to give of myself to the important people in my life, to my friends, to people in my community and to my dream clients with total sincerity. I want to be genuine. I crave truth. I desire to be authentic.

And then once this word really clasped on to me, it kept coming up in so many places. I saw it in scriptures I was reading, like Joshua 14:8 and Jeremiah 29:13. Quotes with my word came up naturally on Pinterest. I searched through the #wholehearted hashtag on Instagram and was so touched. I knew this was my word.

Now that we are a few days in to 2015, it has already helped to guide me in a few ways. It motivated me to get out my front door on days when that was the last thing I thought I could do. Each day I have committed to and followed-through on reading a portion of the Bible. My intention is to read the whole Bible this year. I have even found myself giving emotionally when I thought I had nothing left to give, and being filled up in return even more, because of it. And to all of these beautiful, little moments I say: YES! This is what I hope for. This is what I invite more of into my life.

To life wholeheartedly. To be wholehearted. To tell the story of who I am with my whole heart.

Rejoice!

I was helped recently to look at a scripture in a different light. It really touched my heart, and I was moved to share. The scripture is in Philippians 4:4,5 and many times we just read one or the other of these verses, but when reading them together you can really see and make the connection.

Quote2

There is a direct connection between our rejoicing and our being reasonable. That has to do with our expectation a lot of times…what we expect from ourselves and others. Circumstances change and they effect what we are able to do, but by showing reasonableness and humility we can be gracious with ourselves and still maintain our joy in service. And we can’t expect more than that from others either… our spouse, our family members, those in our congregation, our friends. By being kind, reasonable and forgiving we can help them to find true joy also.

I need to work on this a lot. Many times I expect perfection from myself, and get so down on myself when I don’t meet that impossible standard. So instead I should look at what I can do, what I have accomplished and let that fill me with joy. I should be reasonable, and then be able to fully rejoice! And joy lets us really celebrate the everyday, and then every day lets us celebrate joy.

A favorite quote

FavoriteQuote

This has been one of my favorite quotes since I found it during my junior year of high school. It became a theme for that year, and really, each one that followed. There is something powerful about standing still within a moment and knowing that all you are is leading you to all you will become. Each trial and each test and each blessing are all a part of the journey; nothing is stagnant. Life moves forward, and so do I.  That is why I love this quote today. But maybe someday it will become something different for me…and that’s the beauty of it.

This I know

PostImage2

This summer I have been slowly reading and savoring Susannah Conway’s book “This I know, Notes on Unraveling The Heart.” I am normally a speed reader (just ask Chris, it drives him crazy!) but I knew I wanted to take my time with this book. I just had a feeling it would touch my heart and I would need the time to process each chapter. I was right.

As I read her words I found myself saying, “Oh this chapter was just what I needed. It is so me. The next one couldn’t possibly touch me more than this.” But as I progressed through the book, the next chapter always did. And so did the one after that. Each one felt like it was just what I needed to read.

PostImage1

The thought of “unraveling” can sometimes seems scary…to peel back all our layers and really look at how we feel about things, how we think and learn and cope…how we celebrate. I am embracing it, however. Being in my own transitional period in my life, I am ready to unravel…eager to unravel. And so I followed Susannah as she shared her own journey to self-discovery through this book. It is full of her art…the polaroid photography she is so well known for, and each chapter ends with a “reflection,” a little exercise of sorts, to reflect upon and use in your own life. I truly loved reading it…

I wanted to share a couple of quotes from the book. These are things that I underlined as I read and rewrote in my own journal. Pages that I left tear stains on. Concepts that moved me. And I also want to encourage you to pick up a copy of your own. We could all use some unraveling…

PostImage3

“Each person experiences grief in their own individual way. And…there is no hierarchy to grief—only we can know the pain we feel and what we have lost… To assimilate the loss—to make sense of the change—we must allow ourselves to fully inhabit the pain for as long as we need.”

“So many of the difficult parts of our lives can be helped with a little kindness, and nowhere is that needed more than the way we view ourselves….I want to walk along the middle road, between vanity and not caring; I want to be seen and loved by the person I need it from most. To look in the mirror and smile at an ally I can always count on… My worth is not measured by my outward appearance, my worth is felt in my bones, in the quiet yes that starts in my belly and rises up to my lips as I reach forward and embrace my life, my world, this piece of experience that is mine alone.”

“The more I excavate myself, the richer my relationships with others become, because as we connect with our true selves we have so much more to give.”

PostImage4

If you love words written from the heart, the magic of polaroid, and find yourself needing a gentle push to learn more about yourself, this book is worth a read. Its one of my new favorites on my bookshelf. I’ve passed it on to my mum to read. I think she’ll love it as much as me.

Feeling, not overthinking

I saw this quote from Elise on her Instagram which is one she included in her Project Life. It just struck a cord with me and I wanted to share.

quote

Working on feeling more, living more. And “figuring out”, overthinking less…about lots of things: work, paying the (new and piling up medical) bills, being out of sync with husband for a couple days, the crazy new neighbors we got. Instead I’m feeling grateful for a quick visit from my mum on Saturday, eager to keep learning Russian, happy that we do have jobs that support us, and blessed that Chris and I always get back in sync.

What are you feeling today?

Done is better than perfect.

The other day I was reading a post on Kara's blog from Kam of Campfire Chic.  Kam said something in the interview that just struck me.  It hit my heart hard cuz I needed to hear it.  "Done is better than perfect."  I commented and said I was turning the quote into a desktop wallpaper.  I did, and wanted to share it with you today.  Thanks Kam for the inspiration!!

But why did this quote hit me so hard?  Because I'm a perfectionist.  Its something I really struggle with.  I know there are a few different ways this saying could be taken.  Maybe your first instinct is to view it as an insult - "I'm never going to do this perfectly, so at least its done."  But that's not what it means to me.  I see and read the word "done" as an action, not necessarily something completed.  Just the first step, because sometimes that's the hardest part.  Last year my OLW was BEGIN and it taught me a lot...about setting goals and living with intention.  And I needed it, because many times my fear that the end result would not be perfect held me back from starting; from even trying.  And I don't want to live that way anymore.  My mum taught me that life is like a staircase.  Each day, each triumph, each "try" is another step.  Sometimes we trip and fall back down a few steps.  Sometimes we doubt that the staircase is really leading anywhere because we can't see the top.  Sometimes we are granted a period of peace at a landing along the way.  But should the fear of tripping and falling keep us frozen at the bottom of the climb?  Should our perfectionism keep us from doing?  No!  We should bravely lift our foot up, place it on that step and then check it off as "done."  Done is better than perfect because that is how we all get to where we're supposed to be, with God 'grasping our right hand' leading us along the way.
"For I, Jehovah your God, am grasping your right hand, the One saying to you, 'Do not be afraid.  I myself will help you.'"-Isaiah 41:13
What is something today that you can celebrate as "done"?
How do you read this quote?
Do you struggle with being a perfectionist too?

memories

I followed link after link after link today and found this really sweet and interesting blog called Hello, Moxie!  I've spent some time reading it and was pleasantly surprised by one of the posts containting this image and poem.

I was immediately taken back to the 8th grade and a class where we all memorized this poem.  I loved it then and its still one of my favorites to this day.

Thank you Rudyard Kipling and a random memory from Jr. High for making me smile today.

Have you ever memorized anything like this before??  I'd love to hear about it.
